Animal cruelty and abuse in China: Are these people Barbarians?
78I was due in work late this morning. A quick blood test at the doctor's was booked for 8.45, which meant a late start and a lie in. The lie in vanished, as Leo one of my rescue dogs needed to pee at three in the morning and then again at six. With an enlarged heart and water tablets taken three times a day this often happens to him. Bless him though, he cannot help it.
So I was up around the usual time, with some time on my hands. You may be wondering where this is going but stay with me. An extra mug of tea and a proper watch of the morning's television news seemed a good bet. Perhaps it was not as the coverage from China left me feeling sick and upset.
Reader's please be aware that the videos and words below are not pleasant. They are a fact of life for too many though and we need to be aware of that.
Read it and weep.
I am well aware of China's terrible human rights record. I am also well aware that animal welfare in China is a non existent concept. Well that is not strictly true as I think some in roads have been made.
I created a hub sometime ago about China's animal Olympics and brutal killing of dogs. I have also read other people's work about animal treatment in China. Today's news though shocked me to the core. I think it was the whole picture.
Scene One.
Zoo keepers or trainers were walking behind a small bear cub as it crawled along on all fours. They beat its backside and back legs with sticks until it raised it back legs and walked just on its front ones. Each time its legs fell they were hit with the sticks.
Scene Two.
Tourist buses full of Chinese parents and children were in a circle. In the middle were a handful of Tigers. A truck pulled up and off loaded a large, live calf onto the ground. As the Tigers pounced and ripped the poor creature to death the buses slowly circled and you could see the laughing, happy faces of the people on board. They loved it.
Scene Three.
Tigers in a cage with their trainers. The trainer puts is head close and in the animal's mouth. Dangerous? Apparently not. The Tigers have had all their teeth and claws removed causing them a life time of pain.
Scene Four.
A small bear is dragged around on roller skates with its hands tied and mouth gagged. It is dressed nicely of course so as not to cause offense.
Of course there was more but I shall spare you the details. Check out the video and details at Sky if you need further proof.
One of the most distressing aspects of these videos was the sheer enjoyment that the spectators received from the animal's suffering. Small children giggled excitedly, clapping their hands as live roosters were thrown to the tigers.
There have been reports of mass animal graves full of dead zoo animals that have died of malnutrition, terrible living conditions such as bare concrete pitch black areas where the animal's are kept and animal's being terribly beaten on a regular basis.
I am not sure where this rant is going but I know that something must be done and done soon.
When I last wrote about China's animal cruelty I was surprised by some of the responses left in the comments. Most surprised by those left by God fearing individuals. It is alright making excuses but in the meantime these poor creatures continue to suffer, in the name of entertainment.
Many years ago we were no better. We actually went one better in some ways, I guess, and threw people to the lions. I have no way of understanding that. All I can say is that at the time the people were barbarians and knew no better.
In the 21st Century are we not civilised? Many acts of cruelty meted out to people, children and animals make you wonder if we are. However, in the case of China. it has to be no they are not.
Gratifying oneself by making an innocent, helpless creature suffer at your hands is far from civilised.
Shame on you China.

my friend owns a large piece of woodland and water in rural canada. she keeps swans. chinese people drove several hours from the city to hunt them. they were arrested. tru story.
i have only recently been made aware of the horrific actions of cruelty towards animals in china and other countries. There is absolutely no excuse, no reason great enough to live amongst any animal and bring them a world of hell, pure evil and torture. there lives are taken from humans and so to live ...is this not enough? they deserve to be treated humanely, where is the compassion!!
they beleive "more the animal suffers the more pleasure for the consumer" do they have no emotions? sadistic!
they can't use the excuse of "its their culture" it is not the middleages, the age of human torture is no more... we are animals also!
for me this is the main topic the world leaders should focus on, without changing peoples action towards treating animals how can they learn to treat eachother better to help make the world a better one.
I hope Chinese people would have atleast a little bit of kindness in their hearts
Hello Ethel,
sorry I had that backwards I meant post a link to your hub page,I shared it via face-book above I had not seen it. I have no sight to promote just one person here in Ca. helping animals on the streets in LA,mostly dogs who have been thrown away and shelter dogs who only get a few days before they are PTS, it is sad to know little has changed but you never know what one person can do to make a difference in the world, I wanted to help somehow help after looking at horrible videos of puppy mills here in the USA, without money to donate I wasn't sure what I could do until I saw an add to foster dogs for rescues so I started helping that way. that lead into other ways of helping animals as well. who knows what your blog or Hub will do someone may read it and say I'm going to make a difference for these poor animals and be able to do just that, there are many trying to stop wide spread abuse I need to believe it will make a difference.
To Ethel Smith- are you still on this hub? I don't see any recent posting, 5 months ago is the latest. I just recently found out about the "bear Farms" I was so shocked, the first thing that got me involved with saving animals was the video that peta put out of the raccoon dogs being skinned alive in a Chinese flea market, I was so upset I got up from my computer and paced back and forth not knowing how to process what I just saw, I wanted to throw up, the men with their cig's hanging out of their mouth just chatting away skinning the dogs smashing them to the ground to stun them... I couldn't believe my eyes. fast forward 2 years the next thing I see is the bear bile farming, china again, and the anal electrocution of the animals for their fur. these animals are all alive feeling everything how much more cruel does it get that these things? it was very hard to look at, very very hard and I do not want to see it again but I don't want to forget it either. I want to help in as many ways as I can. I happened upon your "Hub" yesterday and wondered if your still active? D. Allard I signed one of the petitions and wanted to post a link but do not see a way to do so? thxs
i am nearly crying at the bear video if only more people would watch it and want to help :(
i have no idea how people can clap their hands at such a awful things it would be completly different if it was a child being beaten but when its a animal people think it is alright and i dont see the differnce between a child and animals being beaten but the animals cant do anything about it
People we must start petitions ,and write to our governments to boycot any countries who abuse animals .
It is important to speak for animals ,and stand up for them ;as they cannot defend themselves !
They are like children ; they need our help !!!!!!!!!
Hmmm.... Just one some thing I want to point out. It's not only China that has a bad record, but the whole world. I don't like animal cruelty at all, but before you start harping about China, maybe you should look closer at home. North America/Europe was never very kind either, to both animals and humans. So I'd be grateful if the words China and cruelty aren't linked so closely. Thanks!
The very first time I heard about all the animal cruelty in China was about three years ago. One of my close friends over the internet told me he was absolutely heartbroken as he'd just watched a video...so I asked him to send me the video as I was curious. However, I wasn't prepared for what I sat and watched. A group of chinese men were skinning dogs and cats (Still alive) and I couldn't contain the tears or the urge to throw up.
It's becoming a huge problem but the laws in China allow it. Why it's allowed I'll never know because I find it so disgusting. The people who treat animals in that way don't deserve to be a part of humanity. No they may not have been taught what's right and wrong when it comes to these creatures....but free will plays a huge part in it aswell. If you have that, you can stop and think for yourself about what you're doing.
This is a very informative hub, thank you for sharing it!
Ethel, I agree - this is not racist. It's a fact. I'm sure ALL Chinese citizens are not cruel to animals, but let's face it - China has a terrible record of abusing people AND animals!
This is horrific- I am just now realizing the reality of it all. I have seen the videos of the "bear bile " farms in china, and I can not sleep at night because of it. This is pure evil/
Hi Ethel, It's Chrissy,
thank you so much for what you are doing? The answer to Are they barbarians is obviously YES.
Please send people to write letters of what we think of them to the CHINESE EMBASSY in whatever country they are in, there is an embassy as they try to peddle their propaganda of what a great country they are to get tourists.
DO NOT TRAVEL TO CHINA. BOYCOTT CHINESE GOODS..AND WRITE LETTERS AS MANY AS YOU CAN.
Thanks for the Hub Ethel
Animal cruelty is appalling anywhere in the world. One of my friends e-mailed a video from China showing graphically how the fur trade skinned animals alive.
It was stomach-churning. The callousness and indifference of the inhuman-beings involved was chilling.
All the best
I wrote a letter that appeared in my local paper about animal cruelty in China. I'm sorry, but anyone who can get joy from watching such cruelty is a sick, twisted individual. I agree with you: Shame on you, China!!
How do they not have laws protecting these animals? This is disgusting. It makes the country look bad as a nation. Who treats innocent creatures like this? We are guests in their home!
I know you said in your hub that you didn't know where this rant was going, however I think you made a very passionate and important plea. Keeping issues like these in peoples minds is very important. Another well written hub.
This could be a documentary. I think as with all other "bad behavior" of those who supply such entertainment, wouldn't be in business is there were No Demand for such entertainment. Whoever is the audience is as much to blame
Yes, it is shocking but as you also said we were like that and eventually were educated to look at it and think differently. There is a very harsh streak in the charteristic of Chinese people. Most properly from their past where had been treated so harshly that either they stood it or died. Their huge population were plenty to close the gap. So the leader, whoever, didn't worry. That hartship might have become part of it. I am not making excuses for all the cruelty but I myself trying to look behind the scene, so to speak. Now regarding animals they just haven't been told and educated that is no way to treat animals. We had been. Their regime of communism is to blame for not educating them. Until the leader tells them it will go on. WWF will not be able to get into China as such because of the leadership.
I am also can't watch any cruelty to animals and I am sorry for you. I love cowboy films but don't like when they rip the horses around to make them fall. Same as polo. Now polo should be banned. Look at them they way they rip the horses around. That is one thing I hold against William and Harry otherwise they are great.
Oh how horrible! I had no idea. I can't stand it when animals are mistreated. Even in movies, when the animals aren't really being harmed, I have to change the channel if an abuse scene is shown.
As in all the unpleasant things the culprits are not just those that do, but even those that implicitly or explicitly permit it with their applause or their silence.
It`s a pity that all the people who treat animals like this are not thrown into the lions enclosure in china. Then lets see the people (ADULTS AND CHILDREN) happy, clap their hands and be all excited with glee. They are all rotten bastads and may they all rot in hell.
Even though I knew the cruelty inflicted to animals, every time I see a document, such as videos you have put here, I become sad and distressed. Maybe I am too empathetic, but I can not realy understand : these are humans like me, how can they do this? Where is their morality?
I am sad but also glad that you wrote this hub : I hope that it will raise awareness many people as possible

I am a 16 year old American girl living in Beijing China. The animal cruelty is so bad here. Just two days ago my friends and I went into a pet store and my friend wanted one of the dogs. But the dog had been there for about 5 months, and no one wanted it so they killed it.
