The Greek Islands Greece
70
Mainland Greece is a great place to visit. With Athens offering a modern city, culture, history and so much visitors will be spoilt for choice. Sadly in recent weeks the economic stability of Greece has been shook. The government has asked for various loans from the European Union in order to survive.
Tourism is a huge industry for Greece and so visitors will be more welcome now than ever before.
Apart from mainland Greece though there are thousands of Greek Islands that you can visit. From tiny to large, unspoilt to commercialized and traditional to modern there is something for each and every visitor.
The Greek Islands have a totally different feel to mainland Greece. Research your subject well as, over the years, many of these islands have changed and some have suffered at the hands of commercialism.
However, it is still possible to find traditional, unspoilt Greece if you look far enough. For those who want lively night life with their holiday choose resorts such as Faliraki on the Island of Rhodes or Laganas Bayon the Island of Zakynthos, or as it is often referred to, Zante.
I first visited the Greek Island of Lefkas in 1991 and, over the years, have enjoyed a few further holidays on other Greek Islands. Nowhere near enough though. The Greek Islands will always hold a special place in my heart and there are just so many that I still yearn to visit.
High on my list is Skiathos and Skopelos were much of Mamma Mia was filmed. Mykonos were Shirley Valentine was filmed is an attractive prospect. Still Kefalonia, Ithaca, Corfu, Kos, and so many more would be bound to fill my Greek Holiday dream.
Join me then in a visit to those Greek Islands that I have already visited and would return to tomorrow at the drop of a hat. Fellow hubbers have also been added.
Has this taster whetted your appetite? I certainly hope so.
Here is some additional information regarding taking a vacation in the Greek Islands, then.

Hi again, you did say you look forward to reading my thoughts and knowledge again! Sadly this is just another one of the many every day incidents, a horse rather than cat or dog.
Mytilene, Lesvos - March 2012. An evil beast tied the legs of this horse together and left it to die. It's body had been eaten by wild animals, most probably foxes. http://www.zoosos.gr/article/1289/lesvos-xepastrep
Thanks for your response, many people do not want to know the other side of Greece and are happily able to ignore or delete any comments. Sadly this animal abuse has been going on for decades in Greece and nothing to do with the present financial crisis but of course it doesnt help the animal situation. The reason for being one of the worst in EU is because of the relatively small population of 10,000 million. The government are totally indifferent towards the unfortunate animals, which is borne out in their new 2012 Animal Law. Whilst we are doing our utmost to help rehome them inside and outside of Greece, we have the added anxiety of an old woman who promotes the rumours that the dogs are sent to Germany for animal experimentation. There is much information about this on the internet, many very sad videos on youtube which I have made from photos that Greek friends have sent me, Facebook and of course the charity I volunteer at since that unforgettable holiday in Rhodes 2008 http://greekanimalrescue.com/index.htm You are quite right about the Daily Mail not being the most reliable and I am not a follower, but the journalist is someone that we know as being very responsible and freelance, Simon Parke.
Hello Ethel, I had been looking for info about bear baiting and left you a comment but then went on to look at your other hubs as you are also involved with animal well being. I have to say I was astounded, almost horrified in fact, to see you promoting the Greek Islands. I don't know if you are aware, but Greece has one of the worst animal abuse records, per capita, in the EU, and this is all over Greece, mainland and the islands. I discovered after an unfortunately timed holiday in Rhodes in October, that this is what is termed as the "end of the tourist season poisoning" and continues through on an almost daily basis until the following April prior to the next lot of tourists arriving. Most people living out there with companion animals carry syringes of atropine in their bags should their dogs pick up bait. Some of the poisoners go further where there is no antidote and hide finely crushed glass inside meat or fish for the cats and dogs with consequences you can only imagine if you have not seen photos of the dead/dying animals. Of course I have and have spent nearly four years campaigning about this disgrace but it falls of deaf ears amongst the authorities as cats and dogs are regarding as vermin. Hunting dogs are hanged in trees when they have served their purpose, most common in Kos and Crete, bags of live puppies/kittens are thrown in wheelie bins, miles of starving barrel dogs on short chains left in freezing weather or the other extreme of heat with no water and food. The list goes on. Just google or youtube "greek animal abuse". http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-1214960/Re
