Lanyards: A traditional, cute or funny but practical way to show your id or identification
62What on earth is a lanyard?
Basically a lanyard is a rope or chain, designed to carry something, which is often worn around the neck or wrist.
There are other meanings and some have naval influences. Take for example: A lanyard is a short length of line or rope which is used attaching items so they will not be lost overboard.
Lanyards are commonly used these days for wearing ID badges. They keep them secure, easily shown and safe from being lost. Well that's the theory.
Like many people at work these days, I have to wear an Identification badge. In fact it seems as if I have always had to wear one. I worked for our local council for around 14 years and such local government work usually necessitates wearing ID. Having now worked for the NHS for around 11 years, I am in the same position.
Sometimes ID badges have added perks, such as subsidised travel or discount from certain stores. Other times they are just a nuisance. Employers, like mine, often supply a basic ID Badge clip but these are not ideal. Wearing a lanyard can mean that your ID badge is always close at hand. The other reason I like them is they can help to protect your identity. I always wear mine facing me. That way I only show the details to those people who I need to. I much prefer this to displaying my full name to all and sundry.
Depending upon what clothing or uniform you wear for work finding the right place to wear ID badges on clips can be difficult. For women it can be nigh on impossible.
A few years ago a dear friend included an extra little Christmas present that was perfect. It was a sweet and funny Lanyard which displayed my favourite animals, dogs. Up until then I had not realised how practical lanyards were and also how many styles were available.
One of the downsides of lanyards though is if you work in a job where your safety could be compromised. I guess nowadays that could be almost anywhere. However, work such as health, hospitality, finance, security and the leisure industry probably are prime targets for violence and crime.
No-one wants to be wearing a lanyard round their neck if there is a chance that someone just might grab it and hold one. The consequences could be dire. For example, you could be pulled close to someone who may then spit in your face, head butt you or simply smash their fist into your face.
That's why easy release lanyards are such a good idea. If someone grabs hold, the lanyard simply releases, offering a means of escape.
So, if you have to wear or carry an ID badge consider a lanyard. They can be personalised, advertise you and your business, be fun, be stylish or simply be practical.

Great selection, but I stopped wearing lanyards when I retired! Before that, I had to wear one every day.
These are definitely helpful. There are times I don't know how I would have functioned without these things! Great selection here too!!
Now I had no idea there were quick-release lanyards. You are just a walking encyclopedia of knowledge my friend! Thanks for the info.
Oh this is a great hub, I love lanyards they are just so useful. Thanks and Peace :)
good information. I learn much from this hub. good work, Ethel. Thumbs Up for you. Good to see you again. Peace :)
Ethel yes I agree, I always wore mine facing me. Actually that was really bnecause I didnt like the pic. Good interesting hub
Interesting subject for a hub and nice to know that there are easy release ones available...just in case of emergency situations arising. Wear your doggie lanyard with pride! :-)
I have half a dozen of them given to me by various universities where I teach. I keep any pertinent keys behind the ID card on the lanyard while I'm working.
You put a good selection together. I also learned a new word. How about that?
