Samuel Johnson declared that, "when a man is tired of London, he is tired of living" In so many ways he was right although some parts of London are not for the feint hearted traveller.

Hubby does not like visiting London, usually, as it can be hectic and throbbing with visitors. This is the very reason though why so many people like to visit London. There is so much to do and see. In fact far too much for one visit.

If you like your cities big and brash with culture, heritage, fine architecture, parks, zoos, entertainment, children's activities, shopping, a cosmopolitan feel and so much more then London is for you.

For those thinking about visiting London here are a few pointers.

MONEY

Since decimalisation in the 70's the UK's currency has been made up on pounds and pence. There are 100 pence to a pound and various small coins and larger notes. Some shops and outlets will take Euros and Dollars but you will need to check first.

2010 has seen the pound weak against the Euro but holding its own against the Dollar. With current economic problems it is any body's guess what the future may hold.

London can be an expensive place to visit. You can purchase a London Pass which is competitively priced and offers many great benefits and entrance to a wide range of attractions.

As food and drink can be expensive in the centre of London buy such items away from the heart of London, if possible. That said there are many cafes, bars, pubs and restaurants around.

ATTRACTIONS

There are just so many attractions in London. Many are family friendly but there are some which are designed with adults in mind. Wander around Soho at night for a glimpse of the wild side of London.

Mooch around the centre of London during the day and take in Buckingham Palace, Marble Arch, the Changing of the Guard, the London Eye and so much more.

THEATRES AND THE WEST END

There is always a great selection of shows on in the West End of London. Whether you want drama, comedy or a classic musical you will be spoilt for choice. Visit the Opera or the London Ballet for a more sophisticated evening out. See what is on offer at Covent Garden. Check out just what acts are appearing in the Albert Hall or Hammersmith Apollo during your visit.

ACCOMODATION

Accomodation in the centre of London tends to be Hotels. Like most large cities some will be great and others dreadful. Read as many impartial reviews as possible before you book. Book accommodation away from the city centre for a better value and price.

As long as you are near a tube station the attractions of London's centre are never far away. Bed and Breakfast at a guest house or above a Pub may suit you better than a hotel.

PARKS AND GARDENS

There are many green areas in and around London. Hyde Park is a popular destination for tourists as there is a memorial to Princess Diana located here. It is also a great park to enjoy a picnic lunch on a sunny day. London Zoo, which is in Regent's Park, is a huge place to visit. I am not totally at one with Zoos but this one is terrific.

CHILDREN'S AND FAMILY FUN.

Believe it or not London has plenty to offer families and children. Harry Potter has universal appeal, to both young and old alike. Many of the Harry Potter films were filmed in and around London and there are various tours available. Sights such as platform 9 and 3/4 and the telephone box outside of the fictitious ministry of magic, are all dotted around London. Add this with a visit to the film studios, where the Harry Potter films were made and you should have an enjoyable day out.

There are also great children's stores such as Hamleys giant toy store, Benjamin Pollock's toyshop in Covent Garden, Mystical Fairies magical toyshop in Hampstead and Puppet Planet.

HISTORY AND HERITAGE.

History, Museums and Galleries abound all over London. My personal favourites are The British Museum, The Victoria and Albert, The Natural History Museum and The Science Museum. The last three all close together and within walking distance of Harrods.

The Tate and the National Gallery are situated close to each other and are treasure troves of fine art.

Fine buildings such as Buckingham Palace have lovely architecture all around them. Near here you will find what used to be called No 1 London which is Apsely House once home of the Duke of Wellington.

THE RIVER.

River trips along the Thames can take you to Greenwich with its Observatory, Museum, boats and vast green area.

Walk over one of the many bridges that span the Thames to walk along the river bank and enjoy a green area. The embankment is different in different parts. I guess it is as the river is so long. You will see the Houses of Parliament, Big Ben, London Bridge, The Tower of London and more. There is a Wet and Wild at the river's leisure centre.

GETTING AROUND LONDON

There is nothing to stop you taking a traditional double decker bus to travel around the centre of London or even walking. However the tube or London underground offers services to all the most popular attractions. Such travel is quick and can mean that you see as much as possible during your visit.

London Taxis can be expensive unless you have agreed a price or keep an eye on the taxi clock. If you get caught in traffic jams this clock will keep ticking.

Take a coach or train from one of London's many stations to visit the coast, seaside, countryside or other towns and cities.

SHOPPING

There are markets and shops galore in and about London. Carnaby Street, Petticoat Lane, the King's Road, Knightsbridge, Harrods,Camden Lock market and Oxford Street are just a small sample of those available.

Overall.

This hub only offers a glimpse of the attractions available in order to whet your appetite. If you decide to visit London research on-line for the best prices available and latest information on the attractions. Remember in high season London will be busy but, off peak, some attractions may open less often.

It is fair to say that London has more attractions than any other city in the UK and if you fall in love with London it will keep you coming back for more.

When I think that I lived in Southampton (UK) for a year and never made it to London except as a cab ride through, it makes me ill. I really would love a tour of the Tower. Nice well-rounded Hub!

We walk in London also but if time is short the tube is a better option. Yes, you also need to watch out for the fast lane on escalators in tube station during the rush hour.

I love London. On our visits we try to do as much sight seeing by foot as we can or we take the underground. Mind the gap!

Katie, silver, saddle and Habee thanks for dropping by. Like all large cities London has some problems but it is exciting and has many attractions.

Saddle I guess you would notice some of the downsides now.

etherl, what an exhaustive brilliant journey through London. I had a wonderful time in London and surrounding towns back in 1968. I'm sure there are many new structures and skyscrapers erected now, however one can't change the history of England. I toured like crazy, saw so many museums, art galleries, castles, west end theater, pearly queens in the east end market. Portsmouth/ Lord Nelson ship the Victory, Canterbury Cathedral/Black Knight Tomb. Hampton Court, they say old Henry rounds around with different heads in his hands screaming through the hallways, hah.. so many tales. Madame Tussards wax museum blew me away, so life like. Big Ben and Westminster Abbey as I cruised down the Thames. I had a wonderful trip, it was to short only 3 weeks I wanted to stay. Great hub, thanks for the share, I give it a BIG rate UP..

Ethel - London is one of my favorite cities. I took a bus trip around the city once and I have to say it was one of the best bus trips I ever took. They even served tea. Thanks for the overview.
