Max Boyce-Rugby, Leeks and Comedy

By ethel smith

Max Boyce is a Welsh comedian who became famous in the 70s.

At a time when a young Billy Connolly was representing Scottish humour, Jasper Carrot, English humour, Max was the comedian of Wales. His act involved Max interspersing his comedy with humorous songs, He played the guitar and was accompanied by a few musicians.

When he appeared at our local theatre Hubby and I toddled off to see what Max Boyce was like. I have to say we had a thoroughly entertaining evening.

In common with most other Welsh males Max is Rugby mad. He often appears on stage with Rugby memorabilia. He is also sometimes accompanied by a huge daffodil or giant leek which are both pertinent to Wales.

Max was born in Wales in 1945. His father died just before his birth, in a coal mining accident.Never the less, before his entertainment career took off, he was a coal miner.

Max's career is now well established having survived for more than forty years. He has played to packed houses all over the UK and in fact the world. In some ways this is hard to believe as his accent and humour are so very Welsh. He is one of those entertainers though that has funny bones.

If he is telling a humorous tale on stage it can be a bit of a marathon. However the punch line always pays off.

His early writing was poetry though and initially he had no aspirations to go on the stage. It just sort of happened.

Since the late nineties Max's career has been enjoying an increase in popularity again and he is Wales most successful entertainer.
