YOUR HELP IS NEEDED TO WIN THIS FIGHT

China's non-exsistant stance on stopping animal cruelty

This Hub-page will not be for the feint hearted but will hopefully help to publicise China's terrible treatment of animals.

PLEASE BE WARNED THAT THERE ARE UPSETTING IMAGES ON THIS HUBPAGE

One of the first zones I created at Helium.com was to highlight animal cruelty, in particular cruelty to dogs. When I first joined hub-pages it was initially in order to promote an English animal charity which was finding that the economic downturn was seriously affecting its funds.

I have long been passionate about the welfare of animals. This means farm and wild animals and well as those domesticated as pets. My two rescue dogs suffered much pain and suffering in their early days at the hands of cruel individuals. Such cruelty needs to be acknowledged so that it can be addressed and removed.

Whilst I was researching some additional information, for my Helium zone, I came across some worrying details relating to the animal Olympics that China had held in 2006. However there was worse to come. I knew that China had a dismal performance on the world stage as far as human rights went but did not realise that it currently has no laws in place to protect animals or aid their welfare.

This Hub is not designed to offend nor simply shock for the sake of it. I can assure readers that I could have displayed far worse images than those included in this hub. I just feel that if this subject is not given wide scale publicity it will stay buried out of sight and sound of anyone who can change it.

If you find this hub to distressing please do not click onto the YouTube videos. However if you feel moved, try to add to one or two of the petitions that are online or take some sort of positive action against this barbaric treatment of animals in China.

Posted in 2006/7 things may hopefully have changed by time you read this hub.

The treatment of Animals in China.

China may like to flatter itself, and its people, by considering it to be modern and at the forefront of advances, in this, the 21st Century, however with their lack of human and civil rights for their people they certainly have a long way to go. China's treatment of animals makes their position even worse. It takes them back to barbaric days when ignorance often led to animal cruelty.

The Chinese that enjoy the Horse Fighting events will readily tell you that they are traditional fights which have been long established. I suppose it is a bit like fox hunters and bear baiters in the past, in our countries. However just because these types of entertainment were enjoyed years ago does not mean that they have any place in the 21st Century.

With education and civilisation people should be more aware of what is acceptable and what is not. These days there is so much that we can use as entertainment without having to resort to animal torture, for pleasure. Perhaps China has little entertainment but even that does not justify its behaviour. To get the horses to fight those involved will present a mare that is in season so that the stallions are aroused. The mare will then be removed. Added to this the horses are whipped until they are in a frenzy, so that they will put on a good show. Usually the horses do not fight to the death but there are always casualties. Often these injuries will result in a horse having to be destroyed.

The Animal Olympics in China obviously are cruel to the animals. Many of these animals are muzzled, frightened, taunted and more, in order to make them "perform". China seems oblivious to the modern world. They seem to offer reasons for their barbaric behaviour which they think are acceptable. The reasons given why live animals were thrown to tigers was:-

  • To train the tigers for the wild.
  • So that the tigers could hunt their own food.

However this is a nonsense. The setting of a cage with a captive meal does not simulate the wild at all. The fact that there is a crowd of humans loving the whole experience just makes sickening news.

Now I will try and be sensitive in this hub. I do not want to frighten people to death but I do want to shock readers into action. There may be little that we can do but we can make ourselves be heard. With petitions, letters to our politicians, mailings to the Chinese embassies in our countries and making sure that members of the public, in places such as the USA and the UK are fully informed.

China has an appalling record regarding human and animal rights. Among the cruelty to animals in China there is:-

The slaughter of cats, dogs and other animals by skinning them alive.

The use and export of this fur to countries such as ours.

Dogs beaten to death on the streets of China on a regular basis.

A population that still seems to enjoy the cruel spectacle of animal suffering.

Abuse in Chinese Zoos

IN CONCLUSION

With such a vast country as China, eradicating animal cruelty and improving animal welfare will be difficult and take time This is no excuse though. They need to make a start. For God's sake it is 2009 not 1209.

Believe me if you look around the Internet, for example, there are many terrible sights to see regarding animal cruelty in China. I have no doubt that there are a handful of enlightened individuals living in China who feel uneasy about such animal treatment. I have shied away from anything too explicit on this hub. This is because I do not want any sick individuals enjoying the sad stories on this hub and neither do I want to offend anyone. Bear in mind though that we should not simply turn a blind eye to such goings on. By doing so we are almost condoning the behaviour and we are definitely enabling it to continue.

As of yet China has no legislation in place to protect animals or prosecute those committing acts of animal cruelty. Well it is about time that they did, is all I can say about that.

Spread the word about China and its terrible treatment of animals and SHOUT OUT AGAINST it whenever you can.

I did not even look at photos.I think chinese are uncivilized thugs.Wait till the fit hits the shan in the US from our dealings with them.Everything we buy here is made in china and they have no moral compass. They only care about making money.Stuff in pet food from them have killed our pets.Lead in childrens toys.We still buy and buy...when we should be boycotting and boycotting. At this point if we tried not to buy chinese made products we would have to go without a lot and Americans wont do that.Google articles on Foxconn computer factories and the suicide nets. How can u.s. be so far in bed with this atrocious country where even thier people do not have basic human rights.Harvesting organs from political prisoners for sale on "black market"ie. rich folk who need a liver transplant. We are part of the problem here in the us.The government is so crooked. We indirectly encourage all this gross behavior by buying chinese made products.buy american or do without. We are in deep dooo dooo.My general feelings are that human beings are a curse on the animal world and we pretty much destroy any thing we have contact with.Including each other.I love my dog extra everyday for all the animals that are abused or neglected in this world. And I tell him so.

STOP cruelty towards ALL animals NOW and put the people in jail who commit these horrible crimes. SHAME ON YOU ALL !

Cannot believe how much there is going on in terms of animal abuse right now and how completely shambolic the justice system is. If these things were happening to humans the sickos would be caught and given life, but because its an animal its a short sentence because humans think they are the ultimate being. Its disgusting!!!! These people who abuse animals, especially the cases you have described, in my opinion deserve a lifetime of solitary confinement. How can humans be so terrible? I just don't understand how they are allowed to live i really don't. And the people defending eating cats and dogs, sorry but i would rather kill myself than do that my life is no more valuable than theirs. We have taken in many stray cats some left in terrible conditions and i hope to hell the people that left them in such conditions are suffering right now.

It may be hard to believe Melissa but I deleted the worst of the comments.Yes it is a deep issue. Remember though the cruelty shown in this hub is not for food.I think you forgive the people of China too easily. Plenty of the worst of this cruelty is done in the name of entertainment. If they want to claim they are civilised beings this must change. Using the excuse of poverty for all of this will not wash. Watching a video showing Chinese children laughing in fun whilst a live animal is literally fed to the wild animals is a disgrace.

Melissa 3 months ago

Disappointing to see so many racist comments...

Animal abuse is a emotionally charged issue but if you come from a poverty stricken country and havent had the PRIVLIDGE to worry about animal rights because you can barely afford to feed YOURSELF, how can you judge. Its a very serious issue but its deeper then just laying blame on people.

Large number of animals die to starvation, disease, and so on because there are so many of them compacted into a small area. They are also dangerous to people if they become too aggressive and so on. With a limited economy as is in China as well and so many of the people are trying to find a way to make money.

Also, feeding live animals to animals that normally hunt is not much of an abuse because it is the natural cycle of life. But it is abuse when they use pain and torture to train the animals, that I do not condone.

Boycott all things made in China. I've stopped buying things altogether except for basic necessities, just because everything else seem to be made in China. Boycott them and boycott any company that sells anything made with fur. Don't support the fur trade in any way.

But China is not the only country that is evil and barbaric in the way their treatment of animals.

Please, if becoming vegan is too extreme for you, at least go vegetarian for the sake of the defenceless, innocent and gentle farm animals.

Horrible, terrible, and deplorable... but why does a page about animal cruelty in China link to 'related articles' about the Sirius Black "Padfoot" dog being adopted out, a Two-faced cat making the Guinness World Records, and two surfers helping a Great White Shark? None of those are in any way cruel to those animals, with the exception of the potentially exploitative kitty - but even that's dubious. So... maybe you should check what you're linking to in the related articles, or Hub should.

To all you douche bags defending these sick fuck people....It is not about eating dogs..IT IS ABOUT THE SICK TORTURE of these animals before they kill them. The Chinese believe the more they abuse, torture and inflict suffering the better the meat is. Just because you are going to eat something does not mean you have to make it suffer. By the way these are the same sick fucks that eat HUMAN? BABY SOUP

Anais  12 months ago

China is where they skinned the furry alive, for their fur, remember. I first became apprised of that right here on ATS. Way back in '08 or '07, thereabouts. Lets just hope that the massive earthquakes they had, (remember that one, it was really massive and catastrophic?) killed alot of those 'people' who were doing that. It would make me smile, if I knew that for sure.

JAM 12 months ago

I am disgusted I seriously started to cry just looking at those pictures, pictures can say so much. How would they like to be beaten up and being left cold and alone, dying.

John and Tracy 13 months ago

Do these Chinese people (people?...) have any decency or even the slightest bit of feeling at all? Or are they just brutes to steer well away from ? The fear and the plight in some of the animals'eyes as they were about to get skinned or otherwise killed was heart-rendering. We even spotted a gentle Golden Retriever amongst them, one of our favourite breeds, and watched in horror as sweet, obviously very domestic, cats meowed helplessly as they lay crammed in rusty cages on the way to the atrocities awaiting them. An Alsatian even trying to defend itself grasping the vicious iron tongs grabbing its neck before being butchered for 'meat'. It showed more courage on the dog's part than its tortioners may ever master! Need I mention the pain and despair in the eyes of bears in Chinese bear-bile farms?? All this is too ghastly for words. We can only hope animal abusers aren't human, their behaviour makes you feel ashamed of belonging to the human race! No more export of live animals to Asia please! If you still do not understand what I mean: kindly watch another video of a cat getting skinned alive by Chinese children... Sickening.

Mick 13 months ago

Those abject torturers, wherever they belong, are quite simply ignorant. And should be judged in court in a so-called civilised world. For ignorance isn't always quite bliss; particularly for the animals...

Veronique 13 months ago

In reply to Tom's comment:

Seeing those appalling video's again - and their number is endless...- you CANNOT HELP wishing all those Chinese midgets undergo the same fate as they have their animal victims suffer, ONE BY ONE. Abusers needn't be midgets or from China: abusers everywhere should suffer the same fate. Is this Earth, or is it hell? You could be forgiven for wondering...

Sam  13 months ago

Spoonfed on such horrors, Asian youth is bound to perpetrate the tradition. To the point of showing inhumanity to animals abroad sometimes too; cf. one Andrew Quay Wee Meng recently, a 25 yr old student from Singapore in Brisbane, who beat a tame Ibis to death in a park as it was begging for a few crumbs from his sandwich. - This sort of thing happens all over Western countries too, and not solely at the hands of students from South-East Asia... The difference being sanctions do exist and can be applied in the West, whilst no such thing in Asia apart from India. - Where are all the political pressure groups, where is Obama, where - and how much longer - need we sit and wait before something is truly being done? Cannot the poor, who might rely on cruelty as well as 'tradition' to live, be offered alternative jobs and receive more education? It is the duty of governments to care! How come the import of fur and meat products cannot be banned altogether? How come there are no global rules on trade, on hunting, on zoos? Alternatives and sanctions ARE possible. No wonder there are so many wars if ignorance and the ruthless exploitation of vulnerable beings - human or animal - are allowed to continue! IF (to quote L. da Vinci, a rather more civilised person and a genius...) "the time will come when men looks upon the murder of animals as they now look upon the murder of men": starting at the roots, please have that moment dawn sooner than later. Globally. - Only politicians and diplomats can achieve this.

Tom 13 months ago

Yes, practical steps are needed; economic sanctions for a start, and not looking the other way because 'Olympics' and other niceties are on. It's no use wishing those state-legitimated killers undergo the same fate: it will never happen. One shudders at the thought of having to share a planet with such monsters anyway. Western governments have a couple of years left before the Olympics in Brazil: hopefully there will be a couple of sterner international laws by then to prevent a repeat of the process there. I don't much care if Asia is a different continent: brutes can be stopped in the US and Europe: how come they cannot be stopped in Asia? - The sooner China will revert to Chinese Buddhism the better! It may not solve everything but it may help... And the plight of people like Gandhi, the Dalai Lama and many, many others (Einstein, Tolstoy, Albert Schweizer among them) will not have been in vain.

Vicky 13 months ago

As Mahatma Gandhi put it:

"The greatness of a country and its moral progress can be judged by the way its animals are treated"...

In the meanwhile innocent creatures with as much right to live as you and I, go on suffering beyond belief. Simply because they are alive, and were on this planet first, long before man appeared. Everything was peaceful then... - LAWS are indeed needed; so is the courage to talk openly about the problem, at political level.

Samantha 13 months ago

I can hardly bear to watch these ghastly videos, they haunt me for days. But HOW COME that, everything considered and all this being universally known, no more laws are being implemented INTERNATIONALLY in favour of protecting animals? Isn't the lack of such laws a threat to all civilisation? Or don't I quite grasp the meaning of the word? Talk of 'cultural differences' being responsible is a solution of facility, unendurable lip service...

Heather 13 months ago

I don't even know what to do with the pain I'm feeling over this right now....I feel so powerless. Is there really anything we can do? When it comes to money it's a tough battle to fight. The Chinese see animals as having no value..it's obvious by these pics...we may be able to create laws however, their attitude and desensitized way of being exists deep within in generations. I think these videos need to target Hollywood actors....they respond emotional to these things and verbally...they also have many financial resources that will help to make a difference. Oprah? Can letters and pictures be sent to her? Any and all high profile stars!!!!

Good job of drawing attention to this terrible situation. My wife and I try to make sure there are no animal skins or furs on anything that we buy that has been made in China. There are a lot of products with cat fur adorning them for instance, and it sometimes proves tricky avoiding these products and when given them it is troublesome because of the obvious conflict of what is meant to have been a loving gift but really represents an awful reminder of the sad life or lives of the animals that supplied their skins or fur.

On a more personal note, you were one of the first to leave a comment on a Hub I wrote shortly after joining HubPages and had wanted to thank you for taking the time to leave it. While still feeling like a newcomer after two months, I'm a little more up to speed and wanted to let you know how much those few words meant and still mean. Hi there, Ethel. I'm only 12 years old, but extremely intrested in fighting against animal cruelty. Honestly, it is disgusting and just plain inhumane. What do you reccomend someone of my age do? Thank you in advance.

Christy 17 months ago

This is horriable, all those people should be locked up.

Amy Deemer 17 months ago

Anita, I do agree with some of what you wrote....i truly believe karma is a powerful thing, or at least I can HOPE that karma is because ANYONE who gets enjoyment or feels that they have a right to torture other creatures deserve nothing but the same treatment that they give to animals done to them. I am not a believer in reincarnation, but if it did exist, it would only be fair for any person like these barbarians who torture animals to come back in another life as a dog, cat, pig, cow etc whichever the animal is only to have the pleasure of the same treatment done to them.

I must admit though,as a vegetarian for the past 17 years, I find it hypocritical of people who pick and choose which animals "deserve" humane treatment while ignoring other animals well being like farm animals. For instance, pigs are intelligent animals who are just as smart, if not more smart than dogs, yet they are beaten, kicked, punched, slit open, and often die a slow agonizing death in slaughterhouses each day(video doesn't lie). Turning a blind eye or choosing to remain ignorant of the facts so that a person doesn't have to think about how the meat on their plate got there is just as sickening to me as the above information. Humans who feel that because they are at the "top of the food chain" that it somehow gives them the right to treat other creatures however they would like is absurd and just untrue. Killing an animal for food is VERY different than torturing and being inhumane before killing an animal for food..

Amy Deemer 18 months ago

This isn’t a matter of whether Western people agree with Asians eating dogs and cats, it is a matter of HUMANE slaughter….regardless of what the animal, all creatures have an inherent right not to suffer. If you are going to kill an animal for meat, there is ALWAYS a choice to do it in a humane way to minimize torture and pain. Boiling a cat or dog alive, anally electrocuting them, and SKINNING them while they are ALIVE is unacceptable regardless of where in the world you live. But, it makes me wonder, all of the people on this site who are outraged by the way dogs and cats are brutally treated and killed, why do you give such understanding and empathy to those animals, yet eat cows, pigs, chickens, etc? I find it hypocritical that we place more "worth" to some animals and not others. If you were to go to a cow/pig slaughterhouse in the US, you would see barbaric, inhumane, disgusting treatment of animals (pigs especially) that are just as smart as dogs....As a vegetarian of 16 years, it often upsets me the denial that many people choose to live in regarding how the meat on their plate got there.

No one is questioning that animals dont die in order to be eaten by other animals, however we dont go around clubbing animals to death with large stones, we do it humanely, its called "progression within society". I am sure if you went around asia and asked all the humans there how they would like to die, they would choose bullet or lethal injection rather than being beaten to death with a baseball bat or left to die from infection from a wound....

Lauren 18 months ago

This is extreamly wrong!! they cant treat animals like this .... when i first read this site... it made me start to cry... do they think that animals have no feelings,or that they are not important... ai i just cant belive how evil people can be... =(

thank you to who ever made this site, it really made me aware of this cause, and when i am older , i will stop this cruelty some how, i will do watever it takes!!!!

loretta 18 months ago

its so wrong to do that why should they be treated differently

hi im 11 and i am in school writting this.

well your wrong think back through and wonder why anoimals killed or tryed to kill us.?

its not there fault they are hungry, sore or something they dont want to get punished if they dont have a reason

gosh people these days i am wondering whyh they do it in the first place i feel really bad if i did that..

but yet people can stop hitting there children but whats so different about animals how do you think they feel about being abused.. ?

msw109 18 months ago

Hi all. Cruelty goes on day in day out in every country in every walk of life between humans and animals, animals on animals and humans on animals. The need to eat animals is eternal, whether it be as an animal eating another animal or a human eating chicken, steak or fish. We all in the real world accept this a normal. However where the line gets blurred is the way the animals meet their fate, whatever the purpose of thier death. I as an omnivore, and a passionate pet owner, believe every animal on this planet has a right to exist on this planet. If it be a cow produced for beef or milk, a chicken produced for eggs or meat. Where I do take exception is the what can only be described as sheer abuse of animals, and I arent going to pick on just Japan and China, but all the countries on this planet that do not have laws in place to protect thier animals from unecessary suffering in the hands of people that either dont know any different because of tradition or lack of education. The human race can only be judged by itself, until someone stands up for the animal kingdom and educates the world that suffering doesnt need to take place then we will tread water

Thank you. I did locate the Chinese embassy in the US. They have several locations. I would like to start a letter writing campaign and would like your help. I have been talking to some friends and one said 'yes, I knew" but when I asked what they did about it - again 'oh I didn't do anything'

I find that totally unacceptable as Americans and Human Beings that we can let this go on. To not do anything in irresponsible.

I also found a video of a US soldier torturing a puppy. I am sending that video to PETA. Hopefully they will investigage

ethel smith profile image

ethel smith Hub Author 21 months ago

Chrissy that is terrible. Is there no end to their cruelty? Fellow Hubber Habee wrote a piece in her local paper, I think. Google chinese embassy and you will come up with the most appropriate embassy for you.

Currently the best weapon seemws to be making sure that as many people as possible know just what is going on in China

Chrissy 21 months ago

Where do we send letters to the Chinese Embassy?? It's great to blog and chat, but action works. We could flood the embassy with letters.

Can the ASPCA get involved in this?? I just saw another video emailed to me where the Chinese are using dogs as live shark bait after the dog is skinned alive he is thrown into the water bleeding to attract sharks. Something has to be done

koala 21 months ago

theres nothing wrong about eating a dog or a cat, cuz its the same as eating a chicken, but the way asians do it, is so cruelly, the only peaceful and animal loving people in china are the Buddhist monks

Elizabeth Miller 22 months ago

What a sick race !! It's not the fact that they eat animals. We do too!! And conditions in western slaughterhouses are pretty horrible. But in China it seems like the customer demands that the animal be tortured and killed in the most painful manner they can think of before they are killed . The worst is they think it's great to see the suffering and enjoy watching the animals enduring an agonising long drawn out death then they go home licking their lips and eat their prize with great enjoyment. I'm scared to be sharing the same planet as these people!! The only thing we can do is to hit them where it hurts, their economy. BOYCOTT ALL CHINESE PRODUCTS !!!! NOW!!!

One should abandon all the animal products as much as possible, be it flesh, fur, leather.

Having said that i feel there are lot many people out there who care a damn about animals and their sufferings, i ask those guys to imagine that human beings can fell trap to a superior race, and are subjected to similar torture. I feel that even killing a mosquito should be avoided.

What they're doing to the animals is really disgusting. I recently read on http://blog.petaasiapacific.com/legislation/chinaa that China is implementing its first animal protection law.

For a country notorious for its brutality towards animals such as routinely selling the flesh of dogs, cats, scorpions, starfish, etc on streets to be eaten, it’s a big step for China and its citizens. I must say it’s a relief to read about its new law. Animals feel pain just as much as we do, and deserve to be treated decently. I hope this will be the first step towards greater animal liberation in China!

I knew reading this hub was going to make me cry my eyes out. All of these innocent animals. What is wrong with people!!!! This makes me so outraged! I highly doubt if animals ruled the world that they would be treating humans this way. They are loving and forgiving creatures yet mankind insists on abusing them. This is why I prefer animals over people!! I'm going to link this to my Human Fur hub about the pet fur trade in China. This is definitely a five star hub.

Jo the one thing you must do is keep a perspective. I mean that you have done all that you can and are aware of these goings on. You can help make others aware also.

It breaks my heart to see such cruelty also. Take care and look after yourself. Sometimes when you have been in pain a long time it is easy to get depressed and sadness touch you too personally.

Jo Weston 2 years ago

It has only been in the last week that I have realised what has been going on in terms of China and their lack of animal rights/ the fur trade in China, Finland and America.

I have been in agonising pain for 3 years due to atypical neuralgia and I think that because I'm in constant pain it makes me more sensitive to the images and footage I have seen. I can't understand how someone could cause such deliberate unnecessary pain.

It sickens me so much and I have had trouble sleeping, I have cried so many tears over this and feel utterly helpless. I wanted to put a stop to it immediately but obviously couldn't and am now sitting with a lot of anger and disbelief that human beings can be so barbaric.

I have signed so many petitions and offered to be part of a letter writing team with Animal Defenders International but I don't know what else to do. I pray for a time to come when this stops.

jessica_alias profile image

I don't believe that humans are civilized. Do you?

Human deeds are much more "uncivilized" than animals. If we rank all breeds of living beings in the scale of "how much civilized they are", i think humans will be at the last position.

Again i say that this is because of nature. Nature has given the power to human beings to show its superiority over other beings. It has given us so much power that we have turned into beasts.

No offense, but this is only my view of looking at this event.

ethel smith profile image

ethel smith Hub Author 2 years ago

You are entitled to your opinion Jessica. I know Humans commit atrocities left right and centre to all and sundry but that does not mean it is right. My opinion is that if we flatter ourselves that we are civilised we should behave as if we are.

Animals are easy targets for cruel people.

jessica_alias profile image

jessica_alias 2 years ago

Humans have always been very selfish. They always try to get rid of things which get into their way.

Humans not only kill animals, but they also kill other humans and it is "nature".

I am not trying to oppose anyone here but i think that this whole event is natural. This is only one way of showing an expression of the "mankind" in general.

This is appalling - I honestly did not realize the extent of this horror!! Thank you for opening my eyes!

My aunt runs a no kill animal rescue out of Glendale, AZ for cats and dogs. The animals that she takes in are with her until they are adopted or pass on naturally - unless they are stricken with a painful and fatal disease!

A good majority of the animals that have come into her care are due to animal abuse, neglect and uncaring puppy mills.

My heart goes out to these animals and please I'd love to hear about any petitions out there focused on protecting these animals! I can be found on InfoBarrel under the same username!

Little more that can be added here.. I believe this is one topic MOST Americans agree on. We've always known about Chinas cruelty to any living thing that does not meet the Chinese govt. criteria of high value.. including many of their own people.. and every time we buy ANYTHING from China, we inadvertently condon their actions. Sadly, we've been sold out to China by our own Govt., and it is our children, grandchildren, pets, and wildlife that are/will pay the BIGGEST price.. Sorry. Don't mean to be vindictive. Thanks to the tainted dog food that our govt invited?/allowed? into our country from China, I lost the dearest dog that ever lived awhile back. I don't know who I blame more.. the Chinese govt., or our own for allowing it to happen HERE. And as if that weren't bad enough, shortly after the tainted petfood scandal, there was the baby that swallowed the little toy, and died the next morning from toxic poisoning ..again, the toy was made in China. What's with this country of ours?? Knowing of the Chinese inhumanitarian behaviour, why did our govt officials agree to do business with them?? Could it have anything to do with money... do you think?!?

and yes... I am bitter.

Man made fibres are so good and plentiful these days there is no need to have to kill an animal so that you can wear its skin. Entertainment is readily available in all forms also and so using animals as a form of entertainment is just barbaric.

Thanks for dropping by guys. Beth100 the only thing I can say about the living artist is that in order to be true to his art he should tie himself up and undergo the same treatment. Using a poor creature for "his art" is just so cruel and only highlights his stupidity.

To condemn an animal to any of these barbaric treatments shows, in my mind, a lack of moral fibre, a cruel streak, ignorance and a lack of civilisation. I know it goes on all over the wrold but we need to fight to try and stop it.

Cruelty to animals in worldwide. In Costa Rica, an "artist" took a stray dog off the streets and tied him inside a studio. The dog was not given food or water. People walked by, but very few tried to stop this. The dog died of starvation 6 days later. The artist argues that this is "living art". The video link is on YouTube at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3-jIP8i1djg This cannot help but cause one to think how we can call ourselves civilized and humane.

Ethel, when I was in Herbin for the ice festival, in January this year, I went to the Siberian tiger park and saw them feed live chickens and goats to the tigers. They just dangle the live chicken from a pole suspended in the air, and the tigers jump up and hit them down or bit them off the pole, piece by piece. Really quite barbaric, but the Japanese tourists there went mad with their cameras, and one was going to pay for a live donkey....Many do keep dogs and cats in cages, but then others absolutely spoil their dogs and there are many shops selling very cute dog clothes. When I worked in Korea, we lived next door to a dog farm. We went to look and it's a certain breed of dog that is bred for the table and is fed only vegetables, no meat.
