Spring-Looking forward to Spring
67Yet to come
It may only just be the beginning of February but, already, my thoughts are turning to Spring. With each successive year my ever ageing body yearns more and more for spring and summer, and less and less for late autumn and winter.
By early February I find that, although it is still cold where I live, the first few hints of the season to come are making themselves visible.
On this cold early February day it feels fitting to pay homage to the season of birth, Spring. As a Pisces woman it is almost my season anyway.
Spring officially begins on 21st March in the UK.
If the weather is being kind it may feel as if it has already begun much earlier. Sometimes though we experience bad weather, and even snow, well into March.
Winter 2009/2010 has for once lived up to its reputation. In recent years we have had much milder winters and less snow, but not this year. With record cold temperatures in the UK and heavy snow it has been wintry, to say the least. It is still very cold.
Yet in no time at all, this should change.
Spring in my part of the world brings the return of Blackbirds. These lovely birds will not seem so lovely when they waken you early in the morning, though, chirruping away. A family of Blackbirds used to nest in the one large tree, in our small front garden, but sadly this tree had to be chopped down. When flooding struck our town we were one of many households left living in a caravan in their garden for many months. Still the birds appear in our garden looking for worms, searching them out and throwing them, and tons of soil, all over the place. They must have found new accommodation.
One of my favourite things about Spring is the appearance of Daffodils.
They will soon be cheaply bought for display around the home. These bright yellow treasures certainly chase winter away. So many of my favourite spring blossoms are yellow. My Forsythia plant looks dead at the moment, but within a few short weeks, it will begin to show its golden glow again.
Although I livein a city, frogs will soon be croaking also. They have mated for quite a few years in the garden ponds of where I live. However, with many of these ponds now filled in and no-more, they struggle to survive. Yet, each year they return. I know that some never leave. In winter, occasionally, as I move a plant, some earth or pick up paper a large frog will jump out and half scare me to death.
Pink blossom of flowering Cherry trees will arrive a little later. This beautiful flower lasts briefly. A sharp cold spell with strong winds and it will soon be blown off branches, to resemble snow as it falls to the ground. What a mess it will make but it is worth it.
There are so many attractions with spring.
The promise of summer, a feeling of hope lifting your spirits and an end to that sad, heavy hearted feeling which winter can bring.
My final favourite though is bright blue skies. Those heavy grey skies and dark days become less frequent and a bright blue replaces this dullness. Of course, if the sun is shining and emitting some warming rays also, then all will be right with world.

Today in Ohio it is almost 50 degrees and sunny with a little bit of a breeze. Even my 6 year old made the remark that it feels like spring. I love that I came across this Hub just now because NOW Im really in the mood to hike and do some outside spring cleaning! :) All the votes!
Great photos Ethel!
What glorious photographs! I enjoyed your beautiful Hub. Yes, I'm ready for spring--and baseball! :)
It's 3:00 a.m. in Ohio, 10 degrees with over a foot of snow. I am not usually awake this time of night, but I have a terrible head cold and can't sleep. Your hub brought a little bit of spring to my heart. Thank you, ethel smith.
I have weather equal to most peoples spring all winter long. The "snow birds" flock from the cold weather states and stay until hot weather starts to come then they run back to where they came from. Must be nice to have that kind of money to maintain a winter and summer house to live.
I'm with you though Miss Ethel, I look forward to the changing season.
Your hub and pics lifted my spirits! I'm so tired of cold, rainy weather!
I'm with you, sooo ready for some sun and good ole Vitamin D. March 21, is right around the corner now. Great hub!
Ethel, that is a lovely hub and I so enjoyed reading it. I think we all now jearning the warmth and sunshine.
I enjoyed reading your article. I especially loved the pictures. It makes me long for warmer weather. The weather today, in Georgia where I live, was dreary. Your pictures and article brightened my day. Thank you.
If Candlemas Day be sunny and bright, then winter will have another flight.
Today (2 Feb) is Candlemas Day - and it has been cloudy and grey. I think that means that Winter has had it's Day.
Anyway, I hope so. I like winter a lot, but this year I think I've had a bit too much winter.
(And I know that Tricia feels the same.)
