UK Hubtrail: The United Kingdom Hubtrail Capstone-Great places to visit across the UK
67The United Kingdom may not quite be the Great Britain of yesteryear but it is still a wonderful place to visit. With a wealth of history, some fine architecture, museums and art galleries that often have a free entry, markets, fairs, shopping in Harrods and Bond Street, palaces and a Royal Family, pomp and ceremony, the Arts, rolling countryside and many beaches it truly offers something for every type of visitor. Of course, it is renowned also for its unpredictable weather and visitors may encounter, rain, hail or even snow in Spring and Summer.
Still, with so many sights to see it would be a shame to let the weather spoil your vacation.
Rather what you need to do is, adjust the itinerary of your visit to the UK, to suit the weather and our climate.
England is broken down into counties which vary in size. These are rather like states in the USA. However, English law is national and each county is run along similar lines to the next. Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland are included in the United Kingdom, unfortunately some of their citizens would say. For now though that is the case and so this hub includes those UK countries which I have visited.
If I am lucky the list will continue to grow over the years, health and wealth permitting.
The most beautiful county in England?
Cornwall
Cornwall is the county in the south western tip of England. It has a much warmer climate than much of the UK due to the Gulf Stream. Cornwall is the legendary home of King Arthur and The Knights of The Round Table but there is also plenty of actual history surrounding Cornwall.
Remnants of the tin mining industry of the past are still to be found in parts of Cornwall. Fishing and tourism are still thriving in Cornwall although the tourist season is all too brief. When the weather is kind it is lovely enjoying one of the many beaches of Cornwall or even water sports such as surfing.
I have fond memories of:
St Ives, Marazion and St Michael's Mount, Carbis Bay, Cornish Riviera.
Check out:
Whitby in beautiful Yorkshire
Yorkshire
I was born and bred in East Yorkshire, as they say. As a child in the fifties foreign travel may as well have been a visit to Mars. Instead holidays were usually spent at one or more of the coastal resorts or as we would call them The Seaside.
My home town had and still has a wealth of attractions and despite its many problems over the years has striven to maintain a little cultural heritage.
Favourite Yorkshire memories are:
Whitby, Scarborough, Cayton Bay, Flamborough, Withernsea and Hornsea, Robin Hood's Bay, York, Goathland, Flamingo Land
Hastings Old Town
England
Cornwall and Yorkshire are counties of England. I have, however, some fond memories of visits to other parts of England such as:
Beamish Open Air Museum-Durham
I also feel knowledgeable enough to offer some advice to would be travellers to the UK.
Kingston-upon-Hull
My home town Hull as it is both disrespectfully and fondly called is on the North bank of the River Humber in the East riding of the county of Yorkshire.
As hometowns go there will be plenty that are better and probably plenty that are worse.
Famous people from Hull have included:
Tom Courtney-actor, The Housemartins-pop group, Mick Ronson and Trevor Bolder-guitarists in David Bowie's Spiders from Mars, John Alderton-actor, Norman Collier-comedian, Maureen Lipman-actress, Phillip Larkin-poet, Andrew Marvell-writer, William Wilberforce-abolitionist and politician, Joe Longthorne-singer, John Prescott-politician and once deputy prime minister of the UK, Alan Plater-playwright, Amy Johnson-early aviator, Roland Gift-musician amd actor, Andrew Motion, Keith Devlin, Nick Barmby-footballer, Barrie Rutter-actor, Sheila Mercier-actress, Francis Durbridge, Ian Carmichael-actor, Herbert Baker, Brian Rix-comedy actor, Thomas Ferens-philanthropist, Thomas Reckitt-philanthropist and business man and Maria Gilhooley(aka Waterson). And of course I must not forget myself, Ethel Smith, and Wayne of Hubpages.
The city suffered badly in the Second World War during the Blitz, lost its main industry, fishing, when the battle, The Cod Wars, with Iceland were lost and had to endure high rates of unemployment under Maggie Thatcher.
Today it is still fighting back. There is still a long way to go but Hull is far from dead and buried yet.
Beautiful Scotland
Scotland
It is almost ten years since we enjoyed am extended weekend break in Scotland.
This beautiful country was far more impressive than we had expected. The locals were warm people, the scenery stunning and the history compelling.
Scotland would be a great place to spend a touring vacation.
Wales
Wales is on my list of countries that I must visit. With beaches and beautiful scenery it is also, unfortunately renowned for rainy weather. However with such interesting towns and cities plus castles and historical sites to visit your itinerary will be able to cope with whatever weather is thrown at you.
Giant's Causeway
Northern Ireland
The North of Ireland is also classed as part of the United Kingdom. Those who are familiar with The Troubles in Northern Ireland will know all too well that this is not a happy existence for some.
To be continued
I have visited many other places around the UK such as Glenshee and Edinburgh in Scotland and in England London, Manchester, York, Leeds, Stratford-upon-Avon and so many more.
This leaves me with only one conclusion. This Hub like so many soap operas is to be continued.
If you have created any UK hubs that you would like to consider adding to this capstone hub, please send me the links.

Hi Ethel. Thank you for a well written and informative hub. There are many fanstastic places to visit within the UK, it makes me wonder why so many people insist on travelling miles when we have beauty on our doorstep (must be the weather).
Thank you for the link and the helpful information. I think the Hubtrails concept is brilliant and am looking forward to writing more about my favourite places.
