How to make money online: There is no upper age limit to making some money online
78
The great thing about trying to make a little money online is that there is no ageism. Sure there will be some means of making money that are not suitable for older people but, in the same way there will be some that are inappropriate for the young.
Let's face it there are some ways that some people make money online that are rather salubrious anyway.
Still, whatever age you are, you may be able to make some welcome extra money online, by buying and selling, blogging, writing reviews and articles, or completing surveys.
None of these may make you a millionaire but ,with a little luck, some determination, a bit of flair and perhaps a new idea, you may be able to make a nice amount of money.
Even at my age, many of my contemporaries are technophobes, but I am not sure why. If you can work an automatic washing machine, dishwasher and video recorder what makes you think that you cannot use a computer? Well at least the basics.
With retirement many people find that they have more free time but less income. This, then, could be the perfect time to become an online entrepreneur. Here are some tips and a little advice learned over a few years writing and the like online.
One of the main ways, these days, that you can earn some money by online writing, is through affiliate programs. Trust me this is not as complicated as it may sound. Until May this year I had no idea what any of this meant but it is easy peasy to me now. That does not mean though that you are guaranteed to make money through affiliate programmes.
On Hub-Pages, for example, money is earned via affiliate programs. The main one that generates income for Hub-Page writers is Google Adsense. However, making any money takes time and effort. It will be best if you love writing as, that way any money which you earn is a bonus and the job in hand will not feel like a chore.
Making money as an affiliate could be:-
Really it will depend on your blog or the website that you join.
Writing websites
There are many websites which you can join in order to express yourself and make some money. Some pay better than others but all will require some commitment on your part. Many of these sites pay little, when you first join. The money tends to improve with time. This is because your portfolio of work on the site will grow with time.
Older people often do quite well on writing sites for a few reasons. If you are retired or semi retired you will have more free time to spend online. Age brings a wide spectrum of knowledge and life skills, and this means that, if you are older, you have much to share. As long as you are well enough, being active on the Internet, especially by writing, may help your mind stay fit and well.
A few survey sites are somewhat ageist. They may state that the upper age for taking surveys is 65. However, there are some survey sites that want the opinions of an older person. Pinecone Research in the UK is one such site. Pinecone usually only accepts new members by invitation but there are other survey sites that are also less age restrictive. Research the possibilities.
Product Reviews
There are quite a few websites which will pay you for a review of a product. Ciao and Dooyoo are two that spring to mind. It is possible to post pretty much the same review on each site. The pay tends to be better on Dooyoo but it depends how active you are on the site. You will have to read other member's reviews to make any money on either site. These sites tend to have a wide age range of members and readers. The products range from films to holidays, hotels, destinations, breakfast cereal, dog food or what you will.
General advice, tips and warnings
- Always protect your identity online
- If something seems to be too good to be true it probably is.
- Start small
- Do not stretch yourself so that you have too many sites to keep up to date.
- Make sure you know what you are signing up for.
- Sites such as Associated Content pay more to residents of the USA than other countries. Make sure that you have read the small print.
- Read reviews of making money online which are already on sites such as HubPages. These will offer advice from fellow wirters and site members.
- Once you have researched making money online be selective.
- Give the opportunity a reasonable length of time and if you are still not making money move on.
- New sites appear all the time but make sure that your money making opportunity is legal, with an established provider and that it is not a scam.
- Google making money online to see what is available.
THe best way to make money online is to come up with a new idea. This is not always easy though. Perhaps if you list you interests, skills and knowledge first you may receive inspiration.
If you join an established site make sure that you follow the rules and remember that many of these sites are family frinedly.

Your General advice, tips and warnings is encouraging to read through, Ethel. As a hubpage newbie it's nice to think I may find this fruitful, eventually.
How about sharing your idea about the amount of money that is made online from your personal experience.
You can take the poll on my hub and also add a comment that critics my ideas.
Great hub Ethel, I like your catchy title. It is so appropriate as older people start doing more and more online. I'm trying to get my adopted Mom who is 80 to start writing and sharing her wisdom on HP. I will definitely be sharing this hub with her. :)
Writing does hone certain skills and the learning curve does keep me scratching my head at times. But learning new things is always fun and meeting people like you (via the Internet) is such a pleasure that any money that might come is a bonus.
Reading your hub reminded me of what my husband told me, that writing online is more of a 'retirement' job than anything else. I of course disagreed with him but after reading your hub, I realized that I should have said "yes, it's a retirement job but still a job nevertheless, and please define the age of retirement" :). Although I know a lot of people, young and old alike, who shuns working online because they can't understand it, I'm glad to see a lot of people from all ages writing here in HubPages and making money to boot. Thanks for the hub Ethel.
The keyword in your hub tub "some" money.
That part is accurate.
Great hub, Ethel! There's no discrimination against mature Internet users for making money online. The problem is that most seniors are not aware of many legitimate money-making opportunities online; so, they don not take advantage of them. What is great is that more and more seniors are using the Internet for fun and entertainment.
Thanks for the info
I totally agree with you Ethel, we older people do have more time to give to writing on-line. A very informative hub, well done Ethel
So true ethel smith - there is no ageism - no discrimination at all. The internet has been the greatest equalizer ever. And I feel I am just beginning but already making money that is providing a great part of my living wage.
As I plan for total retirement from the rat race - the internet will continue to provide income - no matter where I may travel in the world.
Thanks for this hub!
ethel, not only does it help us oldies to earn a few dollars it keeps our brains more active by doing this.
As they say we have to use it or lose it (the brain that is)
Thanks again for a nother great hub
This is an excellent idea, especially as some people who retire find difficult to stay at home doing nothing after years working for someone else. Writing online is an excellent opportunity to make a little extra money while keeping your mind active.
Very well done article! 2 thumbs up
Totally agree with you - love this Hub. It's motivating and will Bookmark to read again. Thanks.
Ps. I saw you Featured on the Homepage this week, which was really nice. :)
Best Wishes.
At any age, the prospect of making money doing something you enjoy is always a good one. Thanks for sharing.
Thank you, ethel, to give such a lot of information. I will to read it again to get through it a bit more thoroughly. I agree with you and I 'll have too, that age is no barrier.
Great hub!
There certainly is no age limit. Those tips would be pretty helpful for the newbies.
