This week

The week commencing Monday 14th September 2009 has been a strange week as far as the News is concerned. There have been reports of murder, assault and much of the usual goings on. However, this week has also seen the death of three celebrities reported. They died on the 14th, 15th and 16th September respectively starting with the youngest first. Whether or not you deem them to be celebrities of course is up to you. In fact depending where you live in the world, and your age, you may not have heard of some of them. However here are the three that were reported to varying degrees in the news in the UK. May they all rest in peace.

RIP to all three

Monday 14th September 2009-Patrick Swayze

For most of us Patrick Swayze is most memorable for his roles as Sam Wheat in Ghost and as Johnnie Castle in Dirty Dancing. Both of these films are relatively light entertainment but Patrick Swayze added a special touch. In Dirty Dancing his beautifully toned body and fabulous dancing feet brought what was in reality a cheap B rated movie into the realms of a classic.

Lately Patrick has been more well known for his on going battle with pancreatic cancer. He fought this battle with dignity and much bravery. Patrick finally lost his battle with this cancer on 14th September 2009 and died aged 57.

15th September 2009-Keith Floyd

Keith Floyd was a well known British celebrity chef. Floyd had been diagnosed with bowel cancer in June 2009 but actually died of a heart attack on 15th September 2009. His love of food remained until the end. His last meal on this earth included oysters, partridge and champagne.Fitting, I guess, as Floyd was always eccentric and flamboyant.

Floyd had a rather upper crust English accent but managed to have fans from all walks of life. However his eccentricity meant that he had as many viewers who did not like him. Usually seen with a glass or bottle in his hand Floyd definitely loved alcohol.

Floyd became famous in the 1980s and many modern British chefs such as Jamie Oliver credit Floyd as their inspiration

16th September 2009-Mary Allin Travers

Mary Travis was famous in the 1960s. She was the glamorous blond who sang alongside of two rather staid looking guys. The three of them were known as Peter, Paul and Mary. Probably younger readers will not have heard of this trio. Shame as they were pretty good in their day.

The most famous hit that Peter, Paul and Mary had, world wide, was "Leaving on a Jet Plane", although they had other notable hits. At a time when folk music was popular these three often seemed a little out of sync with the times. After all, for teenagers such as me, Bob Dylan and rebellion was the order of the day. Not glamorous blonds. However most young guys loved Mary.

Mary passed away this week after losing her battle with Leukaemia. She was 72 years of age.

  • Why Crete is special

From the moment that I glimpsed the large Greek Island of Crete from the plane I knew I was going to like the place. By the time our two week vacation drew to an end it was a serious love affair. If there is one place in the Med where hubby and I could easily live, Crete is that place - 2 weeks ago

  • I'm a Celebrity Get Me out of Here Fun

I'm a Celebrity Get Me out of Here returned to UK TV screens on November 13, 2011. This wacky reality show was never on my viewing list until a couple of years ago when somehow or other I watched part of one episode. Laugh? I thought I would choke I laughed so much.So what is IACGMOOH about. - 6 months ago

  • Choosing the right pen name

Do you write under your own name or like this Hubber do you prefer to use a pen name. A pen name may be chosen for many reasons. For this hubber it was a lack of confidence in the early days of writing. Although that is not as bad as it used to be it is still there. Ideally it is best to blow your own trumpet and attract readers. So of us do not find that easy. - 6 months ago

  • X Factor UK

For 2011 X Factor has crossed the Pond. This year it is being aired in the US and in the UK. Although Simon Cowell is a wily entrepeneur even he cannot be in two places at once. This means that he is concentrating on X Factor;s launch in the US. He has handed the reins, almost, over to judges Louis Walsh, Kelly Rowland, Gary Barlow and Tulisa Contostavlos. - 6 months ago

  • Halloween shivers

As I decided to lock up for the night I reflected on being home alone. As an adult it was not wrong to be home alone but that did not stop me hating it. During daylight hours it was quite nice. I was able to do as I pleased, when it pleased me, so what was there to dislike?Night of course was a different matter.I may pride myself on not being superstitious but it is easy to forget that as dusk turns to blackest night. "Halloween is just kids nonsense" is easy to believe at ten in the mor - 6 months ago

  • Best Christmas gifts for your man

Christmas may not quite be just around the corner but it soon will be. With so few gift shopping days left before Christmas we all need to get a move on. Sure there will be gifts available for sale up until the very last minute but the choice will diminish all the time.Maybe buying gifts for your man is a doddle but more likely it is just one big headache. A mixture of cash and inspiration will be needed and here are some ideas. - 6 months ago

  • Menorca: Can a return visit live up to expectations? You bet

We visited the small and perfectly formed Balearic Island of Menorca the last two weeks of October 2011. It was to be Hubby's 60th birthday whilst we enjoyed our vacation. We had a wonderful time with generally good weather, although it was a mixed bag. We must have had a great time as, for the first time ever, we said we would return and so we did. This time we spent a two week vacation at the end of September in the same resort and hotel as last year. - 7 months ago

  • A dog called Paddy

Little Paddy came to live with us after the death of our precious dog Leo. Rescue dog Leo had a hard life before he came to us. We all had great fun with him. He loved everyone and they all reciprocated. Then he was diagnosed with a severely enlarged hearty. For more than a year and half he battled on remaining a happy little chap most of the time. Life became a mixture of pills, visits to the vets, vets bills and ups and downs. Finally on August Bank Holiday in the UK 2010, Leo had to be euth - 7 months ago

I loved Travers and Swayze, but I wasn't familiar with Floyd. Thumbs up, as always!

Thanks Mom. There was around 7 or 8 years between each of them. Funny how a few celebs sometimes die together. If you know what I mean.

I'm sorry to hear that Patrick Swayze died. It was terrible to see the nasty tabloid titles. I hadn't heard of the English chef but have heard of Peter Paul and Mary from my husband. Nice hub to honor all three.
