This hub was originally created with Christmas 2009 in mind. However dishwashers are useful appliances all year round. Bear in mind also that Christmas 2011 will be here before we know it.

My dream machine

Compact and functional
Compact and functional

Plenty of families, individuals and couples in the UK still wash their pots, pans and cutlery the old fashioned way. There is nothing wrong with that but, at Christmas time, when the amount of dirty pots and visitors can be huge, wouldn't it be nice not to have to.

Dishwashers have come a long way in the last 20 years or so and there is probably a perfect model to suit you, your lifestyle and your budget.

Here are some hints and tips, and pros and cons, which may help you decide if Christmas 2009 will be the perfect time for you, to treat yourself to a dishwasher, or maybe replace your old one.

Don't you deserve such an appliance?

Size matters

It is easy to think that you have no space for a dishwasher. With the range of sizes these days that is not true, though. Slimline models will fit into the smallest space. For tiny kitchens or utility areas there are dishwashers that sit on the worktop. Finally, for those of you who hate to see appliances such as dishwashers and washing machines on display, there are integrated models.

The price

With the current economic climate there are many bargains to be had. From less than a couple of hundred pounds you can walk away with an up to the minute dishwasher.

Check online for extra discounts but make sure that delivery before Christmas can be guaranteed. Use your favourite cash-back site in order to reduce the price further.

The environment

Dishwashers can be costly on the environment. However, the latest models of dishwashers are designed to be more Eco-friendly. They can be programmed to use less water, wash at cooler temperatures and more. Look for a model that is rated as energy efficient. In the UK the best will be rated triple A. This may not be the cheapest model but there is little point in buying the cheapest model available if it costs a fortune to run and is hard on the environment.

The manufacturer

There are some makers that just have great reputations. However bear in mind that companies change hands but often retain the same name. This could mean that the make you always buy is no longer made by the same company, in real terms.

Research independent review sites online in order to see just which maker comes highly recommended.

Colour

Gone are the days when kitchen appliance were either white or cream. These days there are silver finished, stainless steel, white, black and various coloured finishes. The choice is amazing but unusual costs more

Right for you

Thoroughly read the dishwasher's specification in order to buy the right product for You and Yours. It is no good buying a huge dishwasher because you will need it at Christmas. If once Christmas is over there are only two people regularly dining in your home such an appliance would be a waste of money.

If you have a large family and circle of friends who regular dine with you go for a large family sized dishwasher.

Hubby and I opted for a slimline machine. This was partly as our kitchen is small and also because the specification suited us and it was a good price. We tend to use the dishwasher no more than once a day. Some pans are washed in the dishwasher but you need to be careful. Unless the item stipulates that it is dishwasher safe, wash the items by hand. This applies to some metals and plastics.

We also bought this appliance as it was made by a manufacturer that we trusted. It was triple A rated and for its size takes a surprising amount of dirty pots and cutlery. It is best to read the guide that is packed with the machine. If nothing else it will tell you of any potential problems. Our machine locks itself once the hot water is released and so is fairly child friendly.

Although we have no children its nice to know visitors are safe. Another reason for reading the guide is to read the advice given about the placement of pots, pans and cutlery. You do not have to follow this advice but usually it will tell you the best way to use your machine efficiently. For example, cups and mugs, are washed cleaner when placed in the top basket.

Finally

Of course for many reasons you may not want a dishwasher. However, on Christmas Day, when you are clearing the dishes away you may change your mind.

Ours cost around £190 last year which included a little reduction due to using a cash-back website and free delivery. I bet you could buy one as good, if not better, for a more competitive price. Check out the options now and have a more relaxed Christmas.
