World Cup football: England's World Cup songs

67

By ethel smith

I do not know about other countries who participate in the FIFA World Cup football competition but the UK countries have a tradition of cutting a new song for each World Cup. At least some of the UK countries do.

England has not won the World Cup since 1966. Since that time we have had some good, poor, great and dreadful football teams. We have also had a fair share of dreadful songs.

Check out those below and vote on the best and worst and the end of the hub.

So here goes, or should that be Here We Go, Here We Go, Here We Go?

Not the original video but the best I could find

The first one that I remember was Back Home. As I hated football when I was young I am surprised that I even remembered that one.

In my mind's eye I had thought that it was the winning 1966 squad's song but it was actually from 1970. Some of the '66 players though were the same and sung on this song.

This 1982 effort for some reason has been running through my head lately. I have found that snippets of it have been slipping of my tongue.

As I cannot sing for toffee I imagine it has been a painful experience for those concerned. It was penned by Norman and Spencer from band Smokie. As with the 1970 song it was performed by the England football squad.

1990 World in motion

1986 saw the England squad belting out, We've Got the Whole World at Our Feet, but sadly they did not have.

Youtube did not seem to have a version of this song but the 1990 World In Motion was up for grabs.

Vindaloo

In 1998 this song lulled us into a false sense of security and many actually believed that football was coming home. Sadly it did not.

Written by UK comedians Baddiel and Skinner Three Lions was performed by The Lightning Seeds.

1998 actually saw a few different England world cup football songs released.

The official world cup song was We're in this together, by Simply Red but other songs remain more popular. How does it feel to be on top of the World was a brave effort.

The drunkards anthem Vindaloo seemed to be the winner though. Written by Fat Les the performers were unknown.

We're On The Ball with Ant and Dec in 2002

Popular cheeky chappies Ant and Dec wrote and recorded this 2002 effort.

As youngsters this pair were actors and then a pop duo. These days they are celebrities who host shows such as Britain's Got Talent and game shows.

World at your feet remixed by Embrace

World at your feet, in 2006 was remixed and recorded by Embrace.

It may have been popular with football fans but for me was instantly forgettable.

So what about World Cup 2010?

Well yet again it seems that there is more than one song.

The official England song though is When England Rule the World.

Wonder if there will be any truth is this song title.

Well in about 6 weeks time or so we shall know.

When England Rule the World 2010

Rugby songs are a little different. Football songs sometimes have the hooligan element I'm afraid

they sure have passion. I love the way they sing at rugby. We have nothing to show!

Does that mean you do not want England to win ? lol

As long as they never sing "We Won the Cup" I don't mind so much :-)

Mind you, the Scottish songs are just as bad, just not as frequent. lol

They are a bit tacky on the whole Tony. I guess your dance is like the Cameroon footballer who used to shake his stuff when he scored. Now this will be much more fun than our drunken singing.

Well I don't much like these kind of "special occasion" songs to be honest. They all sound a little phony to me. I think South Africa does have a song but I'm doing my best to avoid it! We do have a speical dance, though, which is being punted all over the place, called the "Disci Dance" and it has developed out of what South African soccer players have long done to celebrate goals, as well as the dances of fans encouraging their teams. It is rather fun! You will no doubt see it when the fun and games start in just over a week!

Love and peace

Tony

I remember the New Order one, not familiar with the others. Looks like a great tradition though to get people all involved.

Maybe they should stick with something traditional, like "Rule, Britannia"! lol
